The proposal of a fast ferry service between the two islands, having been debated for a number of years, has recently been dropped due to a ‘change in policy’ according to Transport Minister Hon. Ian Borg. The government issued a new call for ferry services operating between several harbours, namely Marsaxlokk, Valletta, Ta’ Xbiex, St Julian’s, St Paul’s Bay and Gozo, completely scrapping the requirement for a fast ferry between the two islands with a hop on hop off ferry service being favoured.

This newly proposed service fails to meet the needs of Gozitans commuting between Malta and Gozo on a daily basis, be it for studies, work, medical reasons or travel. Instead, it allows for bidders to develop routes among several harbours, an opportunity for the private sector to provide a touristic service rather than providing a service to improve the connectivity between the two islands.

KSU calls upon the government to reconsider this turnabout in its promise for a fast ferry between the two islands.

Gozitans need a fast and direct link to Malta not a scenic coastal tour.
