Student Organisations on Campus
The Malta Medical Students’ Association (l-Għaqda tal-istudenti tal-Mediċina ta’ Malta) represents all medical students at the University of Malta (UoM) since 1951. The Malta Medical Students’ Association (MMSA) aims to enhance the medical student life through promoting active participation in the academic system, international exchanges and training in various fields of the public health sector. MMSA also aims at empowering society to become functionally involved in holistic health decision making.
Structure
MMSA is governed by 2 bodies: the Executive Board (EB) and the General Meeting (GM). The GM, made up from all attending medical students, is the highest authority in the MMSA and is the body which amends the statute and bylaws of the Association. The members elect the EB via an annual election.
MMSA is composed of various Standing Committees (SCs) in order to ensure specificity to issue targeting. Those are the:
- Standing Committee on Public Health (SCOPH)
- Standing Committee on Human Rights and Peace (SCORP)
- Standing Committee on Reproductive Health including AIDS (SCORA)
- Standing Committee on Medical Education (SCOME)
- Standing Committee on Professional and Research Exchange (SCOPE/SCORE)
In addition, there are other work groups which help in supporting and integrating the aims and objectives of the standing committees. These are:
- Marketing and Fundraising
- Media
- Leisure
- National Peer Education Training (NPET)
Liaison and Affiliations
The MMSA values the importance of liaising with other bodies that have similar principles. Such liaison is done on campus and on a national, regional (European) and an international level.
Campus
University Students’ Council (KSU - Kunsill Studenti Universitarji) and Social Policy Commission (KPS – Kunsill Politika Socjali)
MMSA closely collaborates with KSU and it mostly active within KPS, particularly in the Health Policy Committee.
Curriculum Committee and the Faculty Board of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery
MMSA members, together with the Dean and Departmental Heads, form part of those two bodies. The Curriculum Committee has the purpose of designing and implementing the new integrative curriculum as part of the ongoing process of improving the standard of the UoM medical course. The Faculty Board is responsible for taking regular decisions on faculty academic issues.
European Centre for Educational Resilience and Socio-Emotional Health at the University of Malta (EDRES)
MMSA constantly works with EDRES so as to organise public health discussions for all University students throughout the academic year
National
National Youth Council (KNŻ - Kunsill Nazzjonali Żgħażagħ)
MMSA is a full member of KNŻ and regularly attends its various meetings and events
MMSA is a Registered Maltese Voluntary Organisation at is also an affiliate of the Malta Hospice Movement
Malta Tourism Authority (MTA)
As from summer 2010, MMSA is conducting Reach on the Beach with the MTA. This project has the aim to deliver information on the effects of tobacco, dehydration and sun hazards. It also aims to raise awareness on the importance of the conservation of the natural environment and the cleanliness of public places.
Regional (European)
European Commission (EC)
MMSA representatives actively participate in various conferences and workshops organised by the European Commission. MMSA is also an active partner in ‘Help – for a Life without Tobacco’, the smoking awareness EC campaign. Till now MMSA devised 3 projects within this campaign, one of which consisted of training other European medical students in public health peer education. MMSA is also recognized as a partner in the European Action on Drugs (EAD) – as part of the initiative MMSA organises public outreach and peer education sessions in various academic institutions so as to raise awareness about this issue.
European Medical Students’ Association (EMSA)
Being a full EMSA member, MMSA representatives participated in the annual EMSA General Assembly and are part of the EMS Council and the Working Group.
International
International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA)
MMSA is a full member of the IFMSA and although being one of the smallest National Medical Organisation, the Maltese delegation is always one the largest during all IFMSA General Assemblies. MMSA is also proud of having members who occupy posts in the Team of Officials of this internal federation. MMSA hosted 2010 European Regional Meeting where 250 European medical students attended. MMSA continuously comes up and shares numerous projects with other members of the federation. Those projects are now conducted all over the globe.
World Health Organisation (WHO)
MMSA representatives form part of the WHO Youth Network and participate in conferences and workshops organised by the Organisation. MMSA is also a registered partner with WHO and it organises national public health awareness campaigns on each International Health Day.
