Established in 1908, the Malta Medical Students’ Association (MMSA) is one of the oldest student associations found at the University of Malta. Members include all students of the faculty of medicine and surgery, as well as post graduate students.

The main purpose of the MMSA is to represent students and to liaise between the faculty and the students. Moreover, it ensures that international standards in educating medical students are reached so that the faculty produces well trained and holistically professional doctors. An equally important priority on the MMSA agenda is to raise awareness about health and human rights issues and to disseminate information about improving one’s health, as well as getting the student body involved in society.

The association carries out its work through numerous subcommittees. These are responsible for the organisation of a variety of activities, including outreaches to increase awareness on public health and sexual health issues, as well for the organisation of events coinciding with World Diabetes Day, World Aids Day and Women’s Day. These subcommittees are also responsible for student representation, research exchanges, publications, public health, and medical education. Assessment of local medical education practices and discussions between students and faculty are also carried out regularly.

The association is run for and by medical students. MMSA is regulated by an Executive Board composed of 13 members elected by simple majority elections held once a year. MMSA is a full member of both the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA) and the European Medical Students’ Association (EMSA). It is also an active contributor to KSU and KNŻ.
