ELSA Malta - The European Law Students' Association
ELSA is an international, independent, non-political, non-profit-making organisation run by and for students. It is comprised of students and recent graduates who are interested in law and have demonstrated commitment to international issues.

Law students from Austria, Hungary, Poland and West Germany founded ELSA in 1981. ELSA is today the world's largest independent law students association and it is represented in more than 200 law faculties in 35 countries across Europe with membership in excess of 30 000 students and young lawyers. Thus ELSA celebrates its 25th anniversary this year The main celebrations will take place in Portugal, where the idea of ELSA was born more than a quarter of a century ago.

Other anniversary festivities will also be held in Athens (Greece), Buzias (Romania), Bonn (Germany), Kaliningrad (Russia), Lecce (Italy) and Stockholm (Sweden).

The Key Areas

Mirroring the key areas at the international level we concentrate on three key areas. These are:

  • STEP
  • Seminars & Conferences
  • Academic Activities,

The latter, in fact, includes the highly important moot court competition. Winners of the national round are given the opportunity to participate in the regional round held in Italy and there qualify to take part in the final round in Geneva. The Human Rights Seminar is one of the highlights on the calendar. Seminars often feature foreign speakers, both because ELSA is an international organisation by conception and because legal issues can rarely be discussed in isolation, limitedly to the Maltese Scenario.

ELSA Malta is continuously trying to increase the quality and frequency of events. It offers law students opportunities both on the local as well as at international level. To travel on ICMs which are held every six moths in different parts of Europe. Here students can truly understand the European dimension of ELSA. The ICM was organised in Malta only last November, the event confirmed the high standing reputation of our national group.

Publications

Apart from the circulation of publications by ELSA International such as SPEl (Selected Papers in European Law), the national group publish the Magazine ‘Scipta Manent’ twice a year. This Magazine keeps members up to date with upcoming activities as well as giving exposure to past activities. Together with other Marketing material, to the publication promotes events throughout the year.

‘Scripta Manent’ is a vehicle of public relations both towards the students as well as towards our ever appreciated supporters.
