YouthCom - Youth & Community Studies Students’ Organisation

YouthCom, the Youth and Community Studies Students’ Organisation has been launched during a public lecture held by the Department of Youth and Community Studies on Thursday 15th May, 2008. Then, on the 25th June, 2008 we had our first AGM.

YouthCom is the site of student exchange: where we can discuss, reflect and consult each other. We all come to our studies with a ‘capital’ of experiences.  We use this ‘capital’ during our studies, and therefore every student is a host of different experiences which, considering the nature of our status of part time students is highly diverse. This students’ organisation is meant to ‘capitalise’ on our experiences such that we can relate and share our experiences.  Networking is a key- concept that has inspired us to work on establishing YouthCom: we believe in getting to know each other, building relationships beyond the organisation and academic spheres. We also value networking with students getting training in the same field in Universities and Colleges abroad, such that we can be working on projects with other student organisations abroad. In keeping with encouraging the pursuit towards the professionalisation of youth work, we also consider that we interact as a student community with other students pursuing studies in related disciplines, such that we can create an affinity with other future professionals who will be in employment with young people.

YouthCom is also a working-link with the Department of Youth and Community Studies by fostering healthy relationships with the resident and visiting lecturers as well as with the Faculty of Education at large. Being represented on the Board of Studies, YouthCom will engage in adequately voicing the concerns of students in the different year groups, collectively and individually. The students’ Association also views itself as developing a proficient liaison with the Maltese Association of Youth Workers- MAY.

This student organisation is a platform from where we, as students, can have access to a voice. A voice in the Department of Youth and Community Studies, a voice on University Campus, and a voice within the wider community. Being evening students, we may at times feel distinctly cut off from the University life. We feel that we are there-yet unrepresented. YouthCom has the role of being present, representing its members on Campus. YouthCom is a valid voice routing the direction of youth work on its professional space and youth policy by establishing the necessary links and voicing ourselves through the strength of our experiences with young people.

YouthCom is an observer member within KPS.
