The Gozo University Group originated in the 1980s and was then officially established in 1987 as a student organization. Since its inception, GUG committed itself to represent and promote the interest of Gozitan student life at university and cater for their particular requirements.
Over the years, the group has undertaken a number of ambitious projects.
Student Grants GUG is the only student organization providing support to Gozitan students studying at the University of Malta. Knowing that student life in Malta posed a financial burden on students, the Group worked hard to obtain extra student supplementary grants for Gozitan students. Discussions were held with the authorities concerned and Gozitan students were initially given an additional grant of LM 15/€34.94 monthly. Subsequently, GUG sought to better this amount. Last year, GUG managed to secure an increase to LM 50/€116.47 a month. Besides, the group held talks with local banks in order to improve the efficiency of the money’s transaction.
Accommodation GUG also tries to help students to find accommodation in Malta. On our newly refurbished website, one can find a list of accommodation with contact numbers. This is to assist students finding a suitable lodging near to University Heights. GUG offers this help in order to avoid unnecessary hassle and flat hunting.
Transport As many know, traveling from Malta to Gozo is time consuming and also very stressful. GUG is aware that sometimes the service is not up to standard and sometimes people are discontented with the service.
GUG has held a number of meetings with the concerned authorities such as the Ministry for Gozo, the Ministry for Transport and Communications and the Ministry for Urban Development and Roads in order to find an efficient public transport alternative. The result of the talks was the Route 450 from Cirkewwa to the University Bus Terminus and back. The bus has been operating since July 2007.
Congress and Seminars organized In 2002, as part of its 15 years celebrations, GUG organized a National Youth Congress with the Theme: Voicing Youth Perspectives. Some of the topics discussed included youths and the European Union and also Gozo as a region.
Annually GUG organizes a number of seminars and introductory meetings. These seminars are held to help students familiarize themselves with the university assessment schemes and prepare freshers to the university lifestyle. Seminars held previously were about methodology and public speaking.
