University Ombudsman

On the 27th October 2009, Education Commissioner Karl Agius and Education Coordinator Roberta Rizzo visited the University Ombudsman’s office in Valletta for what can only be described as a fruitful and successful meeting. With the student in mind, we sought to develop a way in which the University Ombudsman can be readily available to the student on campus, if and when the need arises.

The Education Commission and the University Ombudsman  agreed that students who for serious reasons, cannot call at the Office of the University Ombudsman in Valletta, can now meet him in the KSU board room on Campus.  It is important to point out that the University Ombudsman’s standard procedure is to meet complainants at his own discretion and after students have lodged a formal complaint for investigation.  Complaints are to be made in writing and sent in by post or by email or by filling a standard complaint form that can be downloaded from the University Ombudsman’s website (ombudsman.org.mt/uo) where more information regarding the University Ombudsman’s role is available.

KSU has a relevant informational material regarding the office and functions of the University Ombudsman. These are ready available from the KSU office. Such material can also be downloaded from the KSU portal,  www.ksu.org.mt. On our portal one can also find a link to the University Ombudsman's website.

One reminds the student that for any problem before reverting to the University Ombudsman, one has to first tackle the matter with the University Authorities.  It is to be ensured that that the University Ombudsman is used as a last resort and after the above-mentioned normal complaints procedure have been followed.

What is the role of the University Ombudsman?

The role of the University Ombudsman is to serve as an independent and impartial resource to safeguard the rights and interests and promote the well-being of students and staff at the University of Malta, the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST) and the Institute of Tourism Studies (ITS).  For further information please refer to the University Ombudsman’s website ombudsman.org.mt/uo.
